One year on from last year’s global Blue Water Day, I&TS colleagues in Singapore are using motor boats, paddle boats and bikes to continue the good work.

Almost 50 employees plus their families participated in the “RBC Kallang Waterway Cleanup” event which was designed to raise awareness of the importance of water conservation in water-scarce Singapore as well as clear rubbish from the shores of Kallang Basin and Marina Reservoir.

The initiative was spearheaded by the local RBC Diversity & Inclusion Council, which hosts a busy annual calendar of events focusing on sustainability and equality for everyone.

Kit Chan, from Treasury & Marketing Services, said: “For us, it was really important to be able to extend this opportunity to employees’ families because we want to educate the next generation on the importance of water and looking after our waterways.”

The volunteers were split into four groups before taking on the clean up by motor boat, by bike, by paddle boat and on foot. Kit said: “The motor boat option was the hot favourite as people were able to combine a mini-cruise with the cleaning!”

Together, the four groups collected almost 70 kilos of rubbish from the water and shoreline, consisting of mostly plastic bottles and cans. They also heard a host of tips on saving water from Waterways Watch Society and how to make these tips part of their daily routine.

Kit said: “We were really happy with the turnout and the impact we made. Here at RBC Singapore, we are committed to protecting our waterways and spreading this important message among our family and friends.”
